The International Association of Women Judges – Uganda Chapter (IAWJ-UC), in partnership with the Judiciary of Uganda and with support from UN Women, the Austrian Development Cooperation, and the Gender Justice Platform, has commenced the final regional Gender Responsive Adjudication (GRA) training for Magistrates from Uganda’s Western Region.
The two-day training, taking place from 30th to 31st July 2026 at Protea Hotel in Entebbe, marks the culmination of a nationwide programme designed to strengthen the capacity of judicial officers to deliver justice that is fair, inclusive, and responsive to the diverse realities of court users.
Opening the training, Ms. Adekemi Ndieli, Deputy Country Representative of UN Women Uganda, reaffirmed the organizations commitment to supporting gender-responsive justice in Uganda. She urged Magistrates to administer justice with fairness, dignity and impartiality, stressing the need for survivor-centered adjudication in cases involving vulnerable persons.
Ms. Ndieli encouraged participants to make effective use of the revised Gender Responsive Adjudication Resource Manual, noting that well-reasoned and gender-sensitive judgments not only restore dignity to survivors but also strengthen public confidence in the Judiciary.
HW Roseline Nsenge, General Secretary of IAWJ-Uganda Chapter, outlined the Association’s vision and its continued efforts to promote judicial excellence and gender equality. She encouraged participants to actively engage in the training. HW Nsenge invited Judicial Officers to join the Association, and called upon male judicial officers to serve as allies in advancing gender-responsive justice within the courts.
The training is being facilitated by Lady Justice Anna Mugenyi, who serves as Team Lead, alongside HW Nsenge, HW Christine Nantege, and HW Namwanje Rehmur. Through interactive sessions and practical case studies, the facilitators are equipping participants with the knowledge and skills required to integrate gender-responsive principles into judicial reasoning and decision-making.
This training marks the final regional cluster in the current national GRA training rollout, which has strengthened the capacity of judicial officers across Uganda to advance gender-responsive adjudication and improve access to justice.
